The Old Creamery, Whitby

The Old Creamery site in Whitby was identified in 2008 by Yuill Homes as a potential site for development and has evolved into a joint project with Broadacres Housing Association in which both parties are sharing the risk and reward of this mixed tenure development.

Works started in early 2010 on 68 two, three and four bedroom family homes. The development would provide 10% of its energy use via renewable sources meaning that 19 of the homes will be fitted with photovoltaic cells so that some of the household’s energy requirements are free of charge. 14 of the homes have been set aside for affordable housing through Broadacres Housing Associating and this has been achieved with the help of HCA funding. These homes will meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3.

For its inception this partnership of Yuill Homes and Broadacres Housing Association has worked closely with Scarborough Borough Council, local suppliers, contractors, residents, schools and colleges to endeavour to provide as much local training and employment opportunities as possible. This has included holding Meet the Buyer Days so that local enterprises can gain details of how they can work with the two partners on the development.

In addition to work on the Old Creamery site itself the local authority wanted to enhance an adjacent rugby club facility and we have been involved in the provision of an offsite play facility for local people as part of the rugby club development.

The scheme will see an investment of over £10m into this Yorkshire coastal town.
